AS NZS 1605.1:2018 pdf free. Methods for sampling and analysing timber preservatives and preservative-treated timber
Lengths of timber used as samples (actual or sacrificial) shall be representative of the species, thickness, moisture content and heartwood content present in the sample. During sampling, the following shall be taken into consideration:
(a) If the preservative treatment is against borer attack, selection of non-susceptible timber will not truly reflect the effectiveness of the treatment.
(b) Visible features (e.g. knots) may influence the level of preservative treatment. As the presence of these features will have been taken into consideration in the selection of the material for structural purposes, the sample shall not include these features (see Note below).
(c) The removal of heartwood/knots need only be performed for hazard classes where there are no heartwood penetration requirements.
(d) Where charges, lots or parcels contain a mixture of timber species, sampling shall reflect the material considered the most difficult to treat.
NOTE: Knots are not considered as typical of the treated timber and may have different treatment characteristics from clear wood. It is, therefore, necessary to exclude knots from the sample taken for analysis.
In some cases, where it is impractical to economically or physically analyse the full cross-section of treated timber, a number of plug-bored samples shall be taken. These samples shall be representative of the required penetration patterns as specified in the AS/NZS 1604 series, NZS 3640 or the relevant Standard.
Dowels used to fill the holes left by plug borings shall be seasoned and a tight fit to the full depth of the hole and shall be either a durability class 1 species as specified in AS 5604, or preservative-treated to at least the same hazard class from which the sampled timber was removed.
A sample shall be taken in accordance with the requirements of a specifying document.Where such requirements are not available or specified, the sampling requirements of the AS/NZS 1604 series, NZS 3640 or the relevant Standard shall apply.AS NZS 1605.1 pdf free download.
