Dimensional requirements have been omitted from this Standard on the basis that fixed height chairs are available in a vast range of shapes and sizes and, while there are desirable attributes, (see Appendix B) ultimately, the choice is individual and to place dimensional constraints would place undesirable
limitations on design and innovation.
For chairs that swivel on a central column and attached to star type bases the dimension detailed in Clause 7.2 prevents a tripping hazard and is considered to be a general safety requirement.
To determine the angle of the back inclination, a chair loading point template (see Figures A.1 and A.2) consisting of two shaped members fastened together by a pivot at one end is required. The contours of the shaped surfaces shall be devised so as to sink into upholstery for a representative distance and at moderate loads. For this purpose, the seat loading arm shall have a total mass of 20 kg applied vertically above the seat loading point A.
The apparatus shall be marked as shown in Figure A.1 so that the template can be positioned easily with the two members at 90° to each other.
Loading points A and B correspond to those points on a chair being 175 mm forward of the seat and back intersection point on the seat and 300 mm upward from the seat and back intersection point on the back. Loading point C corresponds to the point on a stool as 175 mm from one edge.
The procedure shall be as follows:
(a) Position the template, with the 20 kg load applied vertically above point A, on the centre-line of the chair as far towards the rear as possible.
(b) Adjust its position by pushing the back loading portion into the back, so levering the seat portion forward until the shape of the template correlates to that of the chair (see Figure A.3).
(c) Measure the internal angle between a vertical line and the face of the back portion of the template as shown in Figure A..3. This angle is the back inclination angle.AS 4688.1 pdf free download.
