AS 3816:2018 pdf free.Management of clinical and related wastes
A waste generator shall identify and segregate waste streams to comply with mandatory environmental and other law that places specific requirements on the packaging, storage, transport, tracking, treatment and disposal of wastes.
The waste generator should also take into account the acceptance criteria of parties that will receive the waste, their own operational constraints and non-mandatory environmental outcomes in establishing the specification for each waste stream and to determine if additional waste streams are desirable.
NOTE 1 The determination of waste streams requires that all relevant features of waste materials be identified.Waste can, for example, simultaneously meet the definition of clinical waste and the definition of cytotoxic waste;or simultaneously meet the definition of radioactive waste and clinical waste; in addition to being a sharp, it can be trackable waste and be recyclable waste.
NOTE 2 Education is an essential requirement in waste identification. See Clause 11 for waste management training.
In addition to the colour and marking requirements in Clause 5.5 and the waste type specific requirements in Clause 5.6 the following requirements apply to all waste types, other than bulk liquid tanks.
NOTE Certain wastes in liquid form generated in healthcare or biomedical research are compatible with the trade waste acceptance criteria for the premises and can be disposed of via the facility’s sewer. Some liquids, such as grease trap waste from food preparation, are stored in bulk pits or tanks and pumped to bulk tankers for removal from the site. This clause is confined to packaged wastes, that is, those wastes packaged in waste receptacles that are moved within the premises to onsite treatment equipment, or to onsite storage pending collection by a waste service provider.
Receptacles intended to be used without being secured to a wall or other support should be of dimensions and a design so as to be stable during the normal rigours of lid opening, and should be stable if bumped or knocked by personnel working or attending the area where the bin is located.Receptacles should be sized so as to limit the gross mass of the receptacle, consistent with risk assessment by a qualified assessor, for the manner in which the receptacle will be moved from the point of waste collection to waste storage. The suitability of the receptacle for handling by onsite waste treatment staff or for the waste contractor during vehicle loading and unloading should also be taken into account where applicable.AS 3816 pdf free.
