Flexible pointing material shall meet the testing requirements in AS 4046.8. For mechanical fastening in wind classifications C2- C4, clips shall be used, or other fastening methods such as nails/screws, to achieve the required mechanical fastening strength as specified in Clause 2.4.2.
NOTE: Flexible pointing material that is labelled as mechanical fastening material may be used as the sole mechanical fastening for all ridge and hip fixing requirements of Table 2.4.2(B),(non-cyclonic regions).
Installing systems shall comprise, either singly or in a combination, flexible pointing, fillers, cement mortars and mechanical fastenings such as clips, nails, screws and adhesives.
Irrespective of which installing system is used, and where it is used, the applicable requirements of AS/NZS 1170.1, AS/NZS 1170.2, AS/NZS 1170.3 or AS 4055 shall be satisfied.
Tiles and ancillaries shall be installed using mechanical fasteners in accordance with Tables 2.4.2(B) and 2.4.2(C).
Additionally, the following applies in the application of Tables 2.4.2(B) and 2.4.2(C):
(a) Tables 2.4.2(B) and 2.4.2(C) shall be used in conjunction with Table 2.4.2(A) and the loading requirements of Clauses 1.5.1 and 2.4.1.
(b) Mechanical systems shall conform to the loading criteria of Clause 1.5.1.
(c) Mechanical fasteners shall be designed to resist the identified wind classification for the site and battens shall be fastened in accordance with AS 1684 series.
(d) Installing tiles to battens and battens to steel frames shall be by non-ferrous, stainless steel or steel.
NOTES:
1 For galvanic protection, see Clause 2.4.3.
2 Appendix C gives nominal mechanical fixing when fixing battens to rafters/trusses.
(e) Mechanical fasteners used to fix tiles and ancillaries to battens/purlins shall conform to AS 2334, have a minimum diameter of 2.8 mm, and be of such a length that the nail will penetrate not less than 15 mm into the timber batten.
NOTE: For metal battens refer to the NASH Standard, Residential and Low-rise Steel Framing, Part 1: Design Criteria.
(f) Self-drilling screws shall conform to AS 3566.1.
NOTES:
1 Care is necessary to avoid overdrilling, which may split the timber batten or strip the screw thread.
2 Clips for installing tiles should be non-ferrous, stainless steel or steel with an appropriate corrosion-resistant coating. The clip should be designed so as not to interfere with the fit of the tiles.AS 2050 pdf free download.
