For ultraviolet absorption type instruments, the sample air containing ozone is passed through a measurement cell. Ultraviolet energy of wavelength 254 nm passes through the cell and the resultant energy is measured using a photodetecting device. The degree of absorption is dependent on the number of ozone molecules in the path, i.e. it is dependent on the length of the cell and is flow independent. The absorption is compared to the absorption with zero ozone and the difference in energy received at the detector is converted into an electrical output and measured.
A continuous direct-reading instrument is required, which shall meet or exceed those specifications given in Table 1. The instrument may be used over any range within the limits of the Standard. The instrument shall be calibrated in accordance with Clause 7. The manufacturer’s published performance specifications shall be deemed as acceptable evidence of conformance to the given requirements providing that they have been carried out in accordance with the procedures based on the US EPA equivalency testing as stated in the US Code of F ederal Regulations, Title 40: Protection of Environment, Part 53 – Ambient Air Monitoring Reference and Equivalent Methods. Direct-reading instruments and methods are constantly evolving and for this reason, this Standard does not specify measurement by ultraviolet absorption methods alone. Providing the instrument performance, as determined above, is within the specifications given in Table 1, alternate methods may be used within the context of this Standard.
In some instances, it may be possible and desirable to make a check of the analyser’ s response. These checks may be performed using test atmospheres produced by a non-certified ozone generator (e.g. internal analyser ozone generators or gas calibrators not equipped with a photometer) and are intended as quick, inexpensive and convenient checks to be used in between Level 1 span and zero calibration/checks to identify possible analyser malfunctions or calibration drift.
